People hoping the federal government would revise its policies when it comes to medical cannabis were disappointed last week when the Drug Enforcement Administration declined requests to reclassify the substance. The DEA was acting upon petitions to remove cannabis from Schedule I. This keeps cannabis in the classification of substances "with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse." Other drugs listed under Schedule I include heroin, LSD, ecstasy, methaqualone and peyote.

Venezuela interior minister lashes out at U.S. over cocaine charges
Venezuela's interior minister and former boss of the country's anti-narcotics agency, General Nestor Reverol, hit back on Monday at accusations by a U.S. federal court that he abetted cocaine trafficking. Earlier this month, U.S. prosecutors announced an indictment charging that from 2008 to 2010, Reverol and another official took payments to alert traffickers over raids, hinder investigations and arrange the release of suspects, cash and drugs.
Pennsylvania not alone in medical marijuana stance
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved marijuana as safe and effective for treating any illness, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as recently as Aug. 11 kept marijuana in the same drug category as heroin, LSD and ecstasy. But Pennsylvania enacted a law in April that lists 17 conditions for which doctors can prescribe marijuana, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism, epilepsy and Parkinson's, Crohn's and Huntington's diseases.

Nurse practitioner cleared of charges
More than two years after his arrest, charges have been dropped against a Danville family nurse practitioner accused of prescribing medications he wasn't licensed to and signing prescriptions with another medical professional's name. On Tuesday, Michael C. Wagner, 47, was scheduled to stand trial on one count of forgery and one count of unlawful acquisition of a controlled substance - both felonies - filed by the state in January 2014 after a two-year investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Vermilion Metropolitan Enforcement Group, a drug task force of local police officers.

Drug suspect dies in PDEA shootout
A DRUG suspect was killed in a shootout with agents of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Negros Island Region when he resisted arrest during a drug bust at Barangay Blumentritt, Murcia in Negros Occidental Monday night. PDEA-NIR Director Julius Navales said Jerome Carampatana and his unidentified companion sold a big sachet of suspected shabu to their agent near a cemetery around 7:30 p.m. After the transaction was completed, Carampatana sensed the presence of other PDEA agents and police operatives, prompted him to fire at them, but his gun did not go off.
